Spring Break Activities to Do With Kids

spring kids rainSpring Break offers many opportunities to both take care of business and have some fun with kids of all ages. Newberg dentist Dr. Jennifer McLeod and her staff at Newberg Family Dental offer these tips to help your time over spring break be both meaningful and fun!

Fun in the Sun…Or Rain

Here in the Pacific Northwest, we would never get outside if we waited until the sun was shining – and it doesn’t often shine during spring break! Show your kids how to appreciate the outdoors, rain or shine, by taking them for a refreshing nature hike in one of our many scenic areas.

If you want to stay close to home during spring break, take the kids and a few friends to a local park with a picnic to have fun running and jumping on a play structure for an entire afternoon. If possible, schedule a camp out in the backyard or a local state park that includes pitching a tent, stories and s’mores around the campfire, and fishing in a nearby stream or lake.

Get the Garden Started

In our neck of the woods, plants really can’t be established outdoors until the end of April when the frost window closes and the weather warms up in general. However, this doesn’t mean that you and your kids can’t get started during this downtime over spring break.

Head to your local home improvement store and purchase good quality soil, seeds, and a small greenhouse kit that fits easily on the top of a table. Garden plants that are easy to grow (and difficult to kill) include beans, corn, pumpkins, watermelon, kale, lettuce and spinach. These are great for your health and can be enjoyed all summer long.

Plant seeds now during spring break and water them regularly so that by the time the frost is gone, your sprouts will be ready to plant. This will also give you a few weeks to figure out how you want to set up the garden in your yard – your kids will love it!

Spring Clean Your Teeth

Warmer weather and new birds and flowers signal that it’s time for spring, which is time for a fresh start! Many of us take advantage of the fresh air to clean out closets and deep clean our homes, but spring cleaning can also be for your mouth. If it’s been awhile, make an appointment with general dentist in Newberg OR Dr. Jennifer McLeod for a comprehensive dental exam and teeth cleaning with a gentle touch during spring break.

This is also an excellent opportunity, while your kids have an extended break from school, to make them appointments at Newberg Family Dental. Call 503-218-3607 to set up appointments for your entire family.
